NEWS FROM THE PRESIDENTIAL CHALLENGE
PRESIDENTIAL CHALLENGE WRAPS UP IN GUATEMALA
In just a few short weeks, the Presidential Challenge will cap our 17thPCCA LOGO anniversary season of “fishing for conservation” with the PCCA Guatemala event, scheduled for Nov. 15-18, 2012 at Casa Vieja Lodge. At stake is not just the tournament title but also the overall season-long race for the Costa Top Team and Eagle Claw Top Angler prizes. A number of teams are in the running for these awards so visit “Standings” on the Presidential Challenge website for more information. As of this time there are still several great boats available for charter so email info@preschallenge.com for rates and information. It’s not too late to fish!
MOMOI SPONSORS PCCA IN 2013
Momoi has come aboard with the Presidential Challenge as the Exclusive Line Sponsor for 2013! This is a big change because anglers will no longer be supplied with line from the tournament–they will be able to purchase their line from a very wide range of  suppliers well in advance of the tournament rather than wait until they arrive to spool up their reels. The official line for the 2013 season will be the Momoi Diamond in hi-vis yellow color; 20-pound test will be used in the PCCA Costa Rica and PCCA Guatemala tournaments and 30-pound test will be used in the Papagayo Cup and Caribbean Cup tournaments. Momoi Diamond is widely available through tackle retailers both locally and online so please join us in welcoming them aboard.
ALUTECNOS JOINS SPONSORS
Another sponsor, Alutecnos, has joined the Series for 2013.

Alutecnos will supply the Top Daily Crew prizes as well as the Top Angler prize in the form of their fighting belts. They will also be supplying some additional goodies for the anglers of the PCCA to win throughout the season so please also welcome aboard Alutecnos!

ADOPT-A-BILLFISH WRAPS UP TAGGING IN ARUBA
The second phase of the Adopt-A-Billfish white marlin satellite tagging program wrapped up recently in Aruba following the Chivas Regal Aruba Caribbean Cup. Dr. Eric Prince from NOAA, along with John Houlihan and Capt. Dan Kipnis were able to tag four large, healthy white marlin with pop-up satellite tags

during their days offshore. The tags are programmed to pop off after a set amount of time, sending their data to an orbiting satellite where it is then downloaded and studied by Dr. Prince and his scientific team. This information is crucial in unlocking the secrets of the white marlin, a billfish species about which little is known. The Presidential Challenge would like to thank Eric Mansur for his invaluable assistance in coordinating the Aruban boats for the tagging as well as Richard Eman for providing lodging for the tagging team at the Aruba Surfside Marina. Also, thanks to the Aruban government for their help in sponsoring a tag and for their hospitality during and after this year’s tournament.

Third Annual Chivas Regal Aruba Caribbean Cup Results!
PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hey Chama Wins Aruba Carribean Cup

Marina Varadero, Aruba-The Curacao-based Hey Chama team pulled off a down-to-the-wire victory in the third annual Chivas Regal Aruba Caribbean Cup, one of the most exciting finishes in the 17-year history of the Presidential Challenge Conservation Series.

Perhaps best known for not just superb marlin fishing but consistently windy conditions and rough seas, the waters surrounding the island nation of Aruba were unseasonably flat calm during this year’s tournament. While more comfortable for the participating anglers, the conditions produced slow fishing and a very tight field going into the last day. With just six minutes remaining on the third and final day, there were four teams knotted at the 600-point mark.

But showing that anything can happen in tournament fishing, the Hey Chama was mobbed by a trio of sailfish in the closing minutes. Just one remained hooked and was fought to a quick release as time ran out, giving the team of Capt. Irving Irausquin, Leonard and Roland Chapman, Ricky Winkel and Rafael Merentes the win with a total of 700 points.
One of the teams counting down the final minutes was the all-lady angler team fishing with Capt. Milton Pichardo aboard the Teaser, a 35-foot Bertram charterboat based in Aruba. The “Reel Teasers” team of Elizabeth, Natessa and Izaira Mansur and Jackie Croes had moved into the lead on the final day with six sailfish and 600 points. They were leading the fleet based on their time of last release as time ticked down. And while the sailfish release from the Hey Chama signaled a second place finish, the ladies took their efforts in great stride, cheering and toasting their finish with some well-deserved champagne upon their return to port.

A third team celebrated some last-day heroics during the Presidential Caribbean Cup. Robert Van Vliet, Elbert Suares, Jan Geerings and Eric Jansen, fishing aboard the Balkan, another vessel based in nearby Curacao, had not released a billfish going into the third and final day of the tournament. But with marlin worth 300 points and sailfish 100 points, they knew things could change in a hurry. By midday, they had their shot-a pair of white marlin came charging into the spread. Both were successfully hooked and released, rocketing the Balkan from obscurity to third place overall.
In the angler division standings, Rafael Merentes emerged victorious with 600 points, scoring a trio of sailfish  releases (including the all-important tiebreaker) and a white marlin kicker during the tournament on the Hey Chama. Natessa Mansur had an outstanding performance on the Teaser to finish second with 400 points, followed by Alex Mansur, Jr. with 300 points on the Iliza. In the Caribbean Cup, anglers rotate rod positions throughout the day to ensure equality in the shots at fish, while certified observers provided by the tournament provide a level playing field. In addition, 30-pound test line is supplied to all participants, who must use non-offset circle hooks throughout the tournament.

Nicaragua: Unique…Original

Nicaragua: Unique…Original.

Sport fishing is truly one of Nicaragua’s greatest draws. With two oceans, gigantic lakes, multiple rivers and inviting lagoons, Nicaragua has something different to offer every fishing enthusiast. The International Sports Fishing Tournament takes place each September on the San Juan River and on Ometepe Island, recognized as the world’s 10th largest island to be located in a freshwater lake. In addition, the first International Fishing Tournament took place May 2005 in the lush Solentíname archipelago near the Rió San Juan Region. Still undiscovered, over-fishing has not plagued Nicaragua as it has other nations, and so most bodies of water in and around the country still teem with sea life. Anglers can battle Blue, Black, or Striped Marlin on a Pacific excursion or look on in amazement while reeling in a 100-pound giant tarpon on the San Juan River. Lake Nicaragua (the second largest lake in Latin America) is considered one of the most interesting freshwater fishing spots in the world with bull sharks, “róbalos”, 30-pound snook and mammoth tarpon. Popular fishing outfitters includehttp://www.nicaraguafishing.com/ for Rio San Juan, Surfari Charters (www.surfaricharters.com) and Pelican Eyes Sailing Adventures (www.piedrasyolas.com/pelicaneyes) for Pacific coast fishing.

2012 Barbados International Game Fishing Tournament: March 29 – April 2 | Barbados Game Fishing Association.

The Barbados International Fishing Tournament is one of the premier fishing events in the Southern Caribbean, and attracts participants from across the region and internationally each year for five days of fun and competition.

The 2012 Barbados International Fishing tournament is expected to continue to be a big success, and previous years have seen an average of 35 boats and 200 anglers participating, with some spectacular catches being recorded as the teams revel in the magnificent conditions. Prior years averaged 40 Billfish caught and released, of which the majority (30-35) are Blue Marlin, and then a few Sailfish, White Marlin and Spearfish to keep things interesting, along with scores of Wahoo and Dolphin landed that help the drive to assist the needy children of the island.

White Marlin

Sportsfishing has made remarkable strides in the USA and around the world in rebuilding and enhancing fisheries and the marine environment worldwide, while at the same time providing for enjoyment of terrestrial species such as the fishermen themselves. This union has resulted in a huge following with the latest survey in the USA confirming that there are twice as many Sportsfishermen (40 million) as Golfers, and even more than Golfers (24.4 million) and Tennis players (10.4 million) combined! With a combined economic output in the USA alone of $125 Billion, the economics of Sportsfishing make it a remarkable case study on the marriage of man and the environment. When you combine all of this with some great dockside fun and frolic on a Caribbean Island, well then as they say “the rest is history”!

FORT PIERCE — The boat business sure isn’t what it used to be, but one Treasure Coast builder accepts the new world order and is looking to make it even better.

Roger Dunshee, owner and founder of Twin Vee Catamarans in Fort Pierce, is rolling into next week’s Miami Boat Show with a production boat unlike any other made before it in the United States. But for boaters to really appreciate what makes Dunshee’s latest offering special, they will need to look below its decks and specifically between its hulls.

The 35 Twin Vee Hydrofoil Supported Catamaran offers the affordable quality for which the brand has been known, but with innovation that truly sets it apart from similarly designed catamarans and even vee-hulled boats.

The new Twin Vee incorporates the technology of a stainless steel hydrofoil that supports a portion of the watercraft’s weight during operation.

“The performance of this hull is phenomenal,” said Ernest Denning, a resident of Islamorada who recently drove his Twin Vee from Fort Pierce to his home in the Florida Keys. “I’ve had 50 boats and this thing handles like a Porsche.”

Denning said he ran his boat, rigged with twin Suzuki 300 horsepower outboard motors, 220 miles for 5 hours and 45 minutes, averaged 39 mph and used just 150 gallons of gas. He said he owns a Boston Whaler 32 Outrage and his Twin Vee is larger, wider, faster and burns one-third the fuel.

Foiled again

Dunshee said it’s important to adapt boats to the needs of those who are actively boating.

“Adding the foil enables the guy who enjoys fishing to have longer range, run faster and use less fuel,” Dunshee said. “People aren’t giving up fishing. They’re just trying to find ways to be able to do it more affordably.”

Dunshee said the new Twin Vee is available in two lines, a luxury Mamba version and a more economical Twin Vee version.
