Belize celebrates 25th anniversary of the establishment of Hol Chan Marine Park

Belize’s “Celebration Season” got off to an early start this year with the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Hol Chan, the Caribbean nation’s first national marine park, The Lodge at Chaa Creek’s marketing administrator Larry Waight announced today.

“We usually begin what we call our celebration season in September, a big month in which we celebrate the Battle of St George’s Caye, Belize Independence Day and, closer to home, the birthday of Belize’s first eco-resort, Chaa Creek,” Mr. Waight said

“But this year the celebrations started a bit earlier with so many people joining in observing Hol Chan Marine Reserve rounding the quarter of a century mark, and, with the Maya 2012 celebrations creating more of a buzz as we near the December 21st Winter Solstice, it looks like the momentum is going to continue into the new year. You can already feel the festival spirit,” he added.

Hol Chan, Maya for “little channel” located near Ambergris Caye on the World heritage-listed Belize Great Barrier Reef, is one of Belize’s most popular Caribbean attractions. Officially recognised in July 1987 and extended to incorporate Shark Ray Alley on August 31, 1999, it has since served as a model for marine conservation in the region.

Belize Tourism Setting New Records

From: Belize in the News: Belize Tourism Report.

Belize continues to ride the wave of the record-breaking overnight tourist arrivals that awed the Belize Tourism Industry in 2011. Last year’s success spawned an outstanding momentum that has resulted in an impressive 7.4% spike over 2011’s figures for the first five months: January to May, which all points to yet another jaw-dropper for the Jewel.

In all, Belize’s tourism industry is showing positive signs of setting new records again at the end of 2012. Globally, the destination is on par with predictions recently released from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).  According to UNWTO’s World Tourism Barometer, the first two months of 2012 international tourist arrivals grew by an estimated 5.7% compared to the same period in 2011.  UNTO is predicting that international tourist arrivals will increase by 3% to 4% in 2012 which means that for the first time global international tourist arrivals could reach the one billion mark

Fox News Notes Belize as a Tourist Hotspot

From: Fox News picks Belize as tourism hotspot | Belize Travel Blog.

A recent  Fox News television broadcast highlighting Belize as one of a few selected international tourism hotspots shows that North Americans needn’t travel far to visit one of the world’s best vacation destinations, according to The Lodge at Chaa Creek’s Larry Waight.

“It was interesting to be watching television and seeing Belize come up as one of the Fox News hotspots for 2012, in company with just a few select locations that included more distant destinations such as Vietnam, India and Korea,” Mr Waight said. “What it said to me was, ‘great, you don’t need to travel far to enjoy what tourism industry experts and an authority like Fox News describe as the most interesting and best in the world’,” he said.

During the March 7, 2012 broadcast, Conde Nast Traveller Senior Editor Lisa Gill highlighted Belize.

“It’s sort of undiscovered compared to Mexico, but it’s right next to Mexico, and it’s relatively safe, everyone speaks English there, it’s a really accessible place for Americans to visit and it has loads and loads of these wonderful, ancient Mayan sites that you  can really go explore…” Ms Gill     enthused.
